Bunker 4 is a small, quick-to-play side location completed in two days and added quietly in release 8.1.1. 3 floors/central 'chambers' connect with stairwells and the elevator back to the top floor is accessible from the bottom floor. The bunker was designed to have a short, looping play style; players quickly clear out 15 enemies in close-quarters combat while placing explosives, and escape by elevator before the explosives detonate. 15 more enemies arrive by helicopter shortly after players breach the first door, and players can either choose to wait them out and ambush them on the way in, or to clear the location before they arrive and take the elevator up after the enemies have entered the building, escaping before the explosives detonate and kill the attackers.
The compound came together quickly as I wanted to take a break from my work on the still unreleased Zombies map and release some new map content in the short-term. The layout formed quite naturally, the top floor being effectively a remake of the currently unused 'black box' bunker that existed here before bunker 4, but the new chamber layouts and elevator were intended to modernize the gameplay and provide a loop with minimal backtracking. The explosive objectives give players choices in method- careful players will wait to place explosives until clearing the location, whereas brash players will find themselves needing to escape quickly from the bottom floor before the bunker explodes. The cave-in visual motif came up while I was experimenting with inclining the floors to add some extra vertical movement. While it didn't end up working for the actual AI combat or player movement route, it turned into the defining feature of the location and really adds to the claustrophobic feel.
